A nine-year-old boy who had been awaiting a heart transplant for eight years has received the life-saving surgery. Dáithí Mac Gabhann was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) at birth in 2016, a rare condition where the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. After years of waiting, his inspiring journey led to changes in Northern Ireland’s organ donation laws.
Following a successful operation at the NHS Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, Dáithí’s family expressed immense gratitude for the new heart he received. Nurses applauded him as he left the ward, with the iconic Rocky theme, “Eye of the Tiger,” playing in the background.
In a social media post capturing the emotional moment, his family shared their joy, stating, “After over eight years of waiting, Dáithí has left Ward 23 with the greatest gift – a new heart and a new lease on life.” They highlighted his strength by referencing the song “Eye of the Tiger.”
Dáithí is expected to remain in Newcastle for three more weeks before returning to Northern Ireland. His medical journey included a bypass machine at just four days old and later complications that necessitated a heart transplant. The community rallied behind him through campaigns like Donate4Dáithí, which raised significant funds and led to legislative changes in Northern Ireland to streamline organ donation processes.
The implementation of “Dáithí’s Law” on June 1, 2023, marked a milestone in organ donation practices in Northern Ireland, making it the last region in the United Kingdom to adopt an opt-out system.
