Amid an intense trade dispute, a strong bond has emerged between Ontario’s Niagara region and Buffalo, N.Y. Niagara Falls Tourism recently showcased this camaraderie by publishing a full-page open letter in the Buffalo News, inviting Americans to join in celebrating with their Canadian neighbors across the border on Saturday evening. At this event, Niagara Falls will be illuminated in the red, white, and blue hues synonymous with the Buffalo Bills, complemented by fireworks in matching colors.
The open letter highlighted the recent occasion when Canadians enthusiastically sang along to “O Canada” during the Buffalo Bills’ home opener at the new Highmark Stadium. The event featured the Barenaked Ladies performing “O Canada” and actress AuliÊ»i Cravalho singing “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Additionally, Visit Buffalo displayed billboards in southern Ontario expressing ongoing support with the message, “O Canada, We’re Still Singing it, Love Buffalo.”
A video shared by the team on social media showcased retired Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and former wide receiver Stevie Johnson engaging in cross-border football catches along the Niagara River, tossing the ball to each other from distant ferries. Adam Stiles, the acting president and CEO of Niagara Falls Tourism, acknowledged the touching gestures and anthem tributes from Buffalo, emphasizing the importance of unity in the face of prevalent news about tariffs and political tensions.
Stiles expressed gratitude towards Buffalo for its kindness, stating that Canadians are eager to reciprocate the goodwill and promote unity during challenging times. The special illumination of Niagara Falls is scheduled between 10 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. ET, followed by fireworks from 10 p.m. to 10:05 p.m. This event serves as a gesture of appreciation and a reminder to American neighbors that they are always welcome in Niagara Falls, Canada.
