“Neglected Toddler Dies from Lice Infestation: Parents Sentenced”

A tragic incident unfolded when a three-year-old named Joycelynn Dylewski passed away due to severe lice infestation leading to anemia, affecting her vital organs. The young girl was discovered struggling to breathe in a New York apartment in February 2025. She was swiftly taken to a hospital but, unfortunately, could not be saved.

The medical examination revealed the presence of clonidine, a blood pressure medication, in Joycelynn’s system, suggesting she might have been sedated. Subsequent investigations unveiled that Joycelynn’s demise was classified as a homicide, attributing it to acute and chronic neglect by her parents, Matthew and Samantha Dylewski. Both parents admitted guilt to criminally negligent homicide in connection with their daughter’s death.

Samantha, the mother, callously blamed the child for her own death, claiming that Joycelynn resisted treatment for the lice infestation. She also attempted to mislead by shifting the responsibility for the ingested medication onto her son. However, evidence, including text messages and internet search history, discredited Samantha’s fabrications.

During the sentencing, it was revealed that Joycelynn’s body harbored not only lice but also other insects like a deceased cockroach. Additionally, the child’s teeth were decayed, and the apartment was described as filthy with flies, rotten food, and a clogged sink. The judge emphasized the prolonged suffering endured by Joycelynn due to the neglect of her parents.

The Dylewski couple received a prison sentence of up to four years for their daughter’s death and were prohibited from contacting their surviving children until 2038. As a response to this tragic case, lawmakers have introduced “Joycelynn’s Law,” aiming to increase the maximum sentence for criminally negligent homicide to 20 years in similar instances of parental neglect.
