Mystery shrouds the unexpected passing of a 25-year-old British man in Thailand following a night out. Liam White, a joiner from Maghull in Merseyside, was residing in a Bangkok hostel when he was discovered deceased. The incident occurred at Hostel 24 Backpackers 50 in Bang Chak on January 13.
An inquest held at Bootle Town Hall revealed that Mr. White had booked the hostel three days before his demise and was sharing a dormitory with multiple individuals. Subsequent to his death, conflicting reports emerged from two post mortems regarding the cause of death.
The Thai post mortem attributed his passing to natural causes, specifically cardiac failure in conjunction with infective pneumonia. In contrast, a post mortem conducted in the UK categorized his cause of death as unascertained. Discrepancies between the findings included the presence of cerebral edema and brain hemorrhage noted in the Thai examination but not considered as causes of death in the UK report.
Furthermore, the Thai post mortem detected morphine and codeine in Mr. White’s blood, although the concentrations were not specified. These substances, when combined, can lead to respiratory depression, particularly in the presence of a chest infection. Due to the inconsistencies and uncertainties in the medical evidence, a definitive conclusion on the cause of death was deemed unattainable.
Assistant Coroner Elizabeth Wheeler ultimately recorded an open conclusion regarding Mr. White’s demise. His funeral reportedly took place at West Lancashire Crematorium in Burscough on January 31, following repatriation of his remains. A GoFundMe campaign was initiated to assist his family with repatriation expenses, raising £5,000 in support.
