“Mother Battles Rare Syndrome: Risk of Blindness & Death”

A mother of two has been coping with a rare condition known as “Silk Road” for the past 25 years, which poses the risk of potential blindness and premature death. Elisha Woodfield, residing in Poole, Dorset, faces ongoing battles with infections and various health issues arising from the uncommon hereditary Behçet’s syndrome, affecting only a small number of individuals in the UK.

Describing her struggles, Elisha mentioned the prevalence of ulcers and lesions all over her body, particularly large ones on her leg that make wearing clothing unbearable due to the raw and rotting flesh-like nature of the ulcers. Behçet’s syndrome, a condition with limited understanding, can lead to severe complications such as strokes and irreversible vision impairment, with individuals experiencing intense flare-ups and periods of remission.

In the UK, Behçet’s UK suggests that up to 2,500 individuals may be living with this condition, as indicated by the registration of 2,208 patients in 2020 at the NHS Behçet’s Centres of Excellence, with 1,000 considered as “active cases.” Elisha, aged 36, endures excruciating pain at times, recalling an incident where a lesion covered her entire thigh, causing distress to a pharmacy worker due to the severity of her condition.

The origins of Behçet’s syndrome are still unclear; however, it is more prevalent in regions like the Far East, Middle East, and Mediterranean countries such as Turkey and Israel, affecting individuals from various ethnic backgrounds. Elisha disclosed her family’s connection to the disease, tracing it back to her Iranian grandfather, who passed it on to her mother and aunt, the latter tragically succumbing to the syndrome at the age of 60.

Due to her heightened blood pressure reaching critical levels of 290/170, Elisha had to postpone a surgery for a fractured ankle. Seeking relief, she initiated a GoFundMe campaign to address the impact of the syndrome on her oral health, aiming to raise funds to remove seven broken teeth causing constant infections and discomfort while eating.

Despite enduring challenges, Elisha found solace during her pregnancies, feeling improved well-being and reduced ulcerations during those times. Concerned about her children displaying symptoms of the condition, particularly her son experiencing mouth ulcers, she anticipates a medical consultation for a possible diagnosis. Elisha’s ultimate wish is to provide the best care for her children, acknowledging the uncertainties surrounding her health and its potential impact on her ability to support them fully.

Apart from dental interventions, Elisha’s fundraising efforts also target acquiring mobility aids for enhanced home accessibility. If you wish to support Elisha’s cause, you can access her GoFundMe page by clicking here.
