Weather models indicate that the current heatwave in the UK, pushing temperatures above 30C, is expected to continue for over two weeks. The GFS weather model projects daily temperatures exceeding 30C until July 22, suggesting prolonged heatwave conditions. Forecasts predict temperatures may surpass 35C on multiple days during this period, with highs of 36C anticipated in western England and at least 32C in central and southern regions.
Further projections from the GFS model suggest similar highs reaching 36C in western England and 35C in parts of Wales and southern England by mid-next week. The following Saturday is expected to bring widespread hot weather, with temperatures potentially reaching 37C in eastern England, marking a peak in this heatwave period.
Temperature anomaly maps depict the UK experiencing significantly above-average temperatures, with deep red shading indicating the regions expecting to see the most significant temperature surges. According to the GFS model, 23 counties across England and Wales could witness temperatures exceeding 35C within the next 15 days.
The Met Office forecasts that while this week’s temperatures may not reach the levels of the June heatwave, highs of 35C are still expected. Southern UK regions could experience temperatures around 32C today, rising to 34C by Thursday, and possibly hitting 35C in isolated locations on Friday and Saturday. Night-time temperatures are not likely to be as high as in June, but urban areas might remain in the high teens, with a few places experiencing tropical nights where temperatures stay above 20C.
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates advises that England and Wales will face hot conditions, extending to parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland with peak temperatures in the upper 20s. He recommends taking precautions against the heat and sun exposure due to high UV levels and temperatures.
