Montreal Victoire’s Championship Trophy Missing

The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) announced on Friday that the Montreal Victoire’s version of the Walter Cup, the league’s championship trophy, is currently missing. The PWHL stated that the trophy did not reach its intended destination as scheduled and is collaborating with the shipping company to locate it.

The trophy was supposed to be sent to Lethbridge, Alberta, where Victoire forward Dara Greig was set to spend the day with it. However, upon the container’s arrival, the Walter Cup was not inside, prompting Greig to postpone her planned events, including a public appearance at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.

Unlike the National Hockey League (NHL) and the Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not assign a dedicated individual to accompany the trophy during its travels to be with players. The missing Walter Cup is distinct from the one presented to teams on the ice following a championship win, as that version is permanently housed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The absent trophy, similar in design to the original cup crafted by Tiffany & Co., is made of sterling silver, weighs approximately 35 pounds, and stands at 24 inches in height and 13 inches in width. It features engraved W’s representing the league’s six original teams and rests on two rods resembling hockey sticks, with the base showcasing past championship teams.

Montreal secured the cup by defeating Ottawa in Game 4 of a best-of-five series in May, becoming the first Canadian team to claim the PWHL title. The Walter Cup is named after PWHL founder and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra.
