Canada’s Marco Arop secured the fourth spot on Friday at the Diamond League event held at Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne, Switzerland. Arop took an early lead and led the pack into the final lap, but he couldn’t sustain the pace, finishing just outside the top three with a time of 1:43.18.
The victory in the men’s 800m race went to Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi in 1:42.19, with Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati coming in second with a season-best time of 1:42.31. American Brandon Miller claimed the third spot with a time of 1:42.55.
Last year, Arop and shot putter Sarah Mitton were the sole Canadians to qualify for the Diamond League Final in Zurich, where they both secured third-place finishes. Arop was ranked second in the men’s 800m Diamond League standings before the Lausanne event, trailing behind Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi. While Arop hadn’t officially secured his spot in the Final, his high ranking positioned him well for qualification.
The 2026 Wanda Diamond League Final is scheduled for September 4–5 in Brussels, Belgium.
In the women’s 200m race, American Kayla White clinched victory with a time of 22.18 seconds. Great Britain’s Amy Hunt narrowly beat Nigeria’s Favour Ofili for the second position, both clocking in at 22.32 seconds. Unfortunately, Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, a two-time world champion, suffered an injury during the race and had to be wheeled off the track.
Up next is the men’s 200m race, featuring reigning Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo from Botswana.
