The Met Office has issued a fresh yellow weather alert for thunderstorms in six UK regions. Meteorologists caution that intense downpours and frequent lightning strikes may lead to significant disruptions on Thursday evening from 6 pm until midnight.
While many areas are expected to escape the worst impacts, the Met Office has advised that certain locations could experience severe thunderstorms forming after a period of hot weather, posing risks of travel delays, flooding, and power interruptions.
Driving conditions might become hazardous due to spray, standing water, and hail, potentially causing longer journey times for drivers and bus commuters.
Accompanying the storms, strong winds could cause damage to buildings and temporary structures, with lightning strikes posing a threat to a few properties and other constructions.
The Met Office cautioned that some residences and businesses could encounter brief power outages and service disruptions as the storms pass through affected areas.
According to the Met Office’s official website, individuals should seek refuge in a secure enclosed space, such as a car. The warning emphasizes avoiding shelter under or near trees or structures susceptible to lightning strikes, and if on elevated ground, moving to lower terrain.
Thunderstorms develop when warm air rapidly ascends into the atmosphere, a common occurrence following prolonged periods of hot weather or during a heatwave. As the sun heats the ground, the air above it rises, cools, and condenses into water droplets, forming clouds that can lead to thunderstorm activity.
This process creates an unstable atmosphere conducive to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds, capable of producing hail, thunder, and lightning.
