The Met Office has issued an extended weather warning for thunderstorms in Northern Ireland. Originally set to begin at midday, the yellow level alert has been rescheduled to start at 9.15am and last until 9pm.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to prepare for potential floods, lightning, and hail throughout the day. Up to 30mm of rainfall is expected to occur within a two-hour period, as reported by the national weather agency.
The forecast indicates a possibility of flooding in residential and commercial properties, which may result in structural damage. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated due to spray, standing water, and hail, possibly causing longer travel durations.
The Met Office warns of potential train service disruptions and building damages from lightning strikes. Power outages are also a concern during the thunderstorms.
To mitigate risks, the Met Office recommends residents in flood-prone regions to devise a flood plan and assemble an emergency flood kit. Additionally, individuals should prepare for potential power cuts by gathering essential items such as torches, batteries, and a mobile phone power pack.
In the event of lightning, people are advised to seek shelter in enclosed structures like cars and avoid standing near trees or elevated areas. Taking these precautions can enhance safety during severe weather conditions.
