Kate and Gerry McCann were in attendance to support their son Sean at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. Sean, the younger brother of Madeleine McCann, was representing Scotland in the 400m individual freestyle swimming event. Alongside Kate and Gerry, Sean’s twin sister Amelie was also present to cheer on her brother at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
Kate, aged 58, caught attention wearing a t-shirt with the phrase ‘Yes Sir, I can boogie,’ a nod to the popular 1977 hit by Baccara, which has become a favored anthem in Scottish football circles.
Sean and Amelie, now 21, were only two years old when Madeleine vanished from their holiday apartment in Portugal in 2007. Despite the global search efforts, Madeleine remains missing.
Sean, a dedicated athlete studying chemical engineering at Loughborough University, has a strong passion for swimming. Starting his competitive journey at the age of eight, Sean has represented Scotland in various events, including the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago.
Although raised in England, Sean competes for Scotland due to his father’s Scottish heritage. He has shown remarkable talent in swimming, achieving notable placements in championships like the European junior open water championships in Corfu and the British Championships.
His recent participation in the 2024 Championships, serving as Team GB’s Olympic trials, led to his selection for the senior Commonwealth Games following his success at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games. Sean’s dedication and hard work are evident in his rigorous training schedule, aiming to excel at future competitions, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Olympics.
Sean, reflecting on his journey, reminisced about his initial reluctance towards swimming, which eventually grew into a deep passion. His commitment to training, including early mornings and rigorous sessions, showcases his determination to succeed in the sport he loves.
