“Massive Fire Engulfs 100+ Properties in Southern Norway”

A massive fire in southern Norway has resulted in the destruction of over 100 properties, leading to the evacuation of numerous residents, as confirmed by emergency services. The blaze, currently engulfing a residential area in Krokstadelva, Drammen, about 30 miles west of Oslo, is now spreading into a nearby forest, according to officials.

Approximately 80 firefighters, along with Civil Defence personnel and six firefighting helicopters, are actively engaged in battling the inferno. Helicopter operations were temporarily suspended during the night, requiring ground teams to combat the flames independently. Concerns were raised about the lack of aerial support hindering efforts to contain the fire.

A local resident, Finn Roine, recounted the swift progression of the fire, witnessing multiple houses being consumed by the flames, including that of his daughter. Police incident commander Frode Presthus mentioned that the fire has escalated into a larger wildfire moving southwards. Plans are in place for the fire service and Civil Defence to confront the blaze from the south and contain it northwards.

Weather conditions, particularly the wind patterns, are a significant concern, with authorities estimating it may take until Saturday to fully control the fire. So far, one individual has received treatment for minor smoke inhalation, and a firefighter sustained minor injuries. There have been no reports of missing persons, and evacuation and support centers have been set up for those displaced.

The cause and exact location of the fire remain unknown. Drammen mayor Kjell Arne Hermansen expressed shock at the scale of the fire and emphasized the importance of following guidance from emergency services and the police. The municipality has activated its crisis management team to address the situation comprehensively.
