The Progressive Conservatives in Manitoba are once again on the hunt for a new leader, marking the third leadership change in just over five years. The sudden departure of Obby Khan has left the party in familiar territory, seeking a figure capable of restoring its reputation among skeptical voters. A decade ago, the PC party enjoyed significant popularity under Brian Pallister, securing a remarkable victory in the 2016 general election with 40 out of 57 seats.
However, Pallister’s tenure was marred by challenges, including public mistrust during the pandemic and controversial remarks on colonization, leading to his resignation as premier and PC leader in 2021 after five years in office. His successor, Heather Stefanson, faced her own struggles, failing to resonate with voters and making contentious campaign promises.
The NDP’s decisive victory over Stefanson’s PCs set the stage for Khan to assume leadership in 2025 following a closely contested race. Despite his background as a former football player and entrepreneur, Khan faced difficulties from the outset. His failure to distance himself from Stefanson and address key issues effectively contributed to his downfall.
Khan’s leadership was further marred by his handling of sensitive topics during the campaign, which alienated centrist voters and failed to garner broader support for the party. His inability to present a compelling alternative to the governing New Democrats under Wab Kinew underscored the challenges faced by the PC party in Manitoba.
