A flight from Dubai to Israel made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia, sparking concerns of a possible hijacking and leading Israel to deploy warplanes. Israeli authorities revealed that the incident resulted from a dispute between the plane’s pilots, with all passengers confirmed safe upon landing at Tabuk, a military and civilian base in Saudi Arabia.
The FlyDubai aircraft issued an emergency alert shortly after departure, as reported by flight-tracking data. An official familiar with the situation disclosed that a quarrel erupted in the cockpit involving the pilots, although the cause of the altercation remains unclear.
In response to the emergency, Israel scrambled warplanes amid fears of a hijacking targeting numerous Israeli citizens onboard. The country’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, had recently cautioned about heightened security threats. Both officials chose to remain anonymous due to the ongoing investigation.
Israel’s Prime Minister’s office assured that the situation was managed, and efforts were underway to repatriate the passengers. Although rare, emergency landings due to personnel issues have occurred before. In a similar incident in 2022, two Air France pilots were suspended for engaging in a physical altercation during a flight from Geneva to Paris.
Passengers on the affected flight recounted hearing commotion and witnessing a sudden dip in altitude before the aircraft landed in Saudi Arabia. They noted the heavy presence of Saudi security personnel surrounding the aircraft. FlyDubai, a budget subsidiary of Emirates airlines, has gained popularity among Israeli tourists following the normalization of relations between the UAE and Israel in 2020.
Flight Radar data indicated that the incident transpired approximately 2.5 hours post-takeoff. FlyDubai later confirmed that Flight FZ 1073, headed to Ben Gurion Airport, safely landed in Tabuk after encountering an incident. The airline expressed cooperation with authorities in addressing the situation and pledged to provide further updates as more details emerged.
While Israel faced hijacking threats in the past, notably from Palestinian militants during the 1960s and 1970s, the country has not witnessed such incidents in recent years. Israel maintains stringent airport security measures, including rigorous screening procedures for flights bound to the nation.
