Southport murderer Axel Rudakubana has been accused by the Prison Officers’ Association of exploiting the system to secure a transfer to Broadmoor Hospital. Rudakubana committed the heinous act of killing three children and injuring several others during an incident at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport in July 2024.
The Ministry of Justice confirmed the transfer of Rudakubana from HMP Belmarsh to Broadmoor, a high-security psychiatric facility in Berkshire, emphasizing that he will remain incarcerated with little chance of release. Representing the bereaved families, Chris Walker expressed dismay at the timing of the transfer, suggesting it was another attempt by Rudakubana to manipulate the system.
Mark Fairhurst, Chairman of the Prison Officers’ Association, criticized Rudakubana for taking advantage of the system to enjoy privileges as a patient at Broadmoor, posing a risk to prison staff. Concerns were raised about Rudakubana potentially receiving benefits at the hospital, although it was clarified that individuals transferred from prison to a hospital setting are not entitled to claim benefits.
Junior housing minister Sally Jameson emphasized that Rudakubana would not receive any benefits at Broadmoor and highlighted the stringent security measures in place to ensure public safety. Rudakubana, sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 52 years for the murders, will not have his sentence affected by the transfer.
The decision to move Rudakubana to Broadmoor was made following a clinical assessment under the Mental Health Act, with officials ensuring rigorous security measures. The Ministry of Justice reiterated that the transfer does not alter Rudakubana’s sentence, which he will serve in its entirety.
