A man has confessed to murdering his mother after pretending to be asleep during police interrogations. Richard Clayton, aged 45, has pleaded guilty to the killing of Angela Clayton, 74, at their residence in Newham, east London. The tragic incident occurred when Clayton strangled his mother on February 17 and subsequently dialed 999 to inform the authorities.
Upon arriving at the scene at 12:48 pm, officers, alongside the London Ambulance Service, discovered the victim in her bedroom, where she was pronounced dead. Clayton, who was apprehended, chose to remain silent or feign sleep during questioning and was formally charged with murder the following day.
In a court appearance at the Old Bailey in central London, Clayton admitted to the murder. Detective Chief Inspector Joanna Yorke from Scotland Yard expressed condolences to Angela’s family and highlighted the irreplaceable loss suffered by her loved ones. The family, in a statement, emphasized their relentless pursuit of justice for Angela.
Clayton is scheduled to be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, September 22. The commitment to combatting violence against women and girls was underscored by authorities and the victim’s family, who seek closure and justice for Angela’s memory.
