The queen of pop is making a grand return to reclaim her throne. A familiar face in the MTV Video Music Awards scene has once again emerged as a top contender for this year’s nominations — and surprisingly, it’s not Taylor Swift. Madonna has secured the most nominations at the VMAs for the third time in her illustrious career.
With a stunning total of 11 nominations at the upcoming ceremony, Madonna’s achievements are attributed to her highly successful album Confessions II and its corresponding film.
Despite Taylor Swift’s status as the most decorated solo artist in VMA history, Madonna outshined her with nine nominations for Swift’s album The Life of a Showgirl and the music video The Fate of Ophelia. Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, both with seven nominations each.

Madonna had previously dominated the VMAs nominations in 1990 and 1998 during her Vogue and Ray of Light eras. Nonetheless, her most famous VMA moment remains her 1984 debut performance, where she stunned audiences by performing Like a Virgin in a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt, pushing the limits of cable television.
This iconic performance is now etched in VMA history as a pivotal moment challenging the boundaries of acceptability on television.
Madonna’s nominations encompass various categories, including video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for Bring Your Love, a collaboration with fellow nominee Carpenter.
Competing for the prestigious video of the year award are Madonna’s Confessions, Swift’s Ophelia, Grande’s Hate That I Made You Love Me, Carpenter’s Tears, Mars’s I Just Might, and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s Storm.
Voting for 13 categories is open to the public this year.
