Céline Dion is gearing up for her upcoming five-week residency in Paris, set to kick off next month, during which she will be sharing more insights into her health struggles and treatment journey. The renowned Canadian artist recently opened up in an exclusive interview with Harper’s Bazaar, revealing her battle with stiff person syndrome, a rare neurological autoimmune disorder that she was officially diagnosed with in 2022 after experiencing symptoms for 17 years.
The excruciating pain Dion endured, particularly intensifying in 2020, sometimes left her struggling to walk, necessitating high doses of Valium for relief. Stiff person syndrome is a progressive condition that worsens over time, affecting only one or two individuals per million. Its symptoms, such as muscle rigidity and painful spasms triggered by stress or sudden movements, have no known definitive cause or approved treatment. However, various therapies can help manage the disorder.
Before her diagnosis, Dion often concealed the true extent of her suffering when canceling shows, attributing it to minor ailments like coughs or sinus infections. Feeling a sense of dishonesty towards her loyal fans, whose unwavering support enabled her to seek comprehensive treatment, Dion made the difficult decision to cancel all future performances following her diagnosis. Although she has not graced the stage since the 2024 Paris Olympics, she is determined to make a comeback in September.
In her quest for recovery, Dion has been diligently following a rigorous regimen encompassing medication, physical therapy, vocal training, and immunotherapy. Additionally, she dedicates herself to 90-minute Pilates sessions three times a week and ballet classes twice a week in preparation for her upcoming shows. Described as constantly on the move and hesitant to remain still for fear of stiffness, Dion’s perseverance and dedication to her comeback are deemed nothing short of miraculous.
Expressing gratitude for her regained ability to perform, Dion acknowledged the preciousness of every moment and opportunity. Her Paris residency, spanning 26 concerts from September 12 to May 29 next year, marks a significant milestone in her journey back to the spotlight. Eager, strong, and slightly apprehensive yet ready for the challenge, Dion’s return to the stage signifies a triumphant comeback from her health struggles.
