Renee Good’s family has filed lawsuits against the U.S. government and several immigration officials, accusing them of wrongful death, conspiracy, and other violations in the fatal shooting of the 37-year-old woman during a federal crackdown in Minneapolis. The legal actions were initiated by Good’s partner, Becca Good, and her brother, Brent Ganger.
Following the incident on January 7, where Renee Good, a mother of three, was shot and killed as protests erupted against immigration raids in Minneapolis, bystander videos captured the events leading up to her death. The footage shows Good in a red SUV blocking the road and honking her horn as two immigration officers approach her. Despite orders to exit the vehicle, Good was fatally shot by one of the officers.
Federal officials claimed the officer acted in self-defense, labeling Good’s actions as “an act of domestic terrorism.” However, analysis of the videos by various sources contradicted this narrative.
The lawsuits seek damages for Renee Good’s wrongful death, emphasizing the suffering she endured and the profound impact on her family. The legal actions also cite intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress on Becca Good. Although not legally married, Becca and Renee considered themselves spouses and had recently moved to Minneapolis from Kansas City.
Furthermore, the lawsuits allege a conspiracy to violate civil rights, with claims that the shooting of Renee Good was a planned operation targeting specific ethnic communities. The legal documents name the immigration officer responsible for the shooting, Jonathan Ross, as well as several other high-ranking officials, including White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and former Homeland Security head Kristi Noem.
The tragic deaths of Renee Good and another U.S. citizen in Minneapolis sparked nationwide outrage and renewed calls for reforms in immigration enforcement. The lawsuits aim to hold the involved parties accountable and seek justice for the victims and their families.
Renee Good, described as a poet, writer, wife, and mom, left behind a legacy of love and kindness, as remembered by her family and friends. The news release on Thursday expressed the shared grief and solidarity with other families affected by similar tragedies, emphasizing the need to prevent such incidents from occurring again.
