The prosecutor general of the United Arab Emirates has initiated an inquiry into the incident that occurred on FlyDubai Flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv, which was diverted to Saudi Arabia following a disturbance in the cockpit. Authorities in the UAE are investigating the circumstances and motives behind the incident to ascertain any potential links to terrorism or premeditated actions.
The UAE holds jurisdiction over the case as the aircraft is registered in the country and operates under its flag, subjecting any crimes committed onboard to UAE laws. Concerns have arisen regarding the co-pilot’s intentions after allegedly attacking the captain of the plane, with Israeli officials suggesting a possible attempt to crash the aircraft carrying over 170 individuals.
Questions have been raised about the weapon used in the attack and how it was brought onto the plane without detection if it was indeed a knife. Fortunately, a potential disaster was averted when the injured captain managed to open the cockpit door, enabling passengers to subdue the attacker, while a reserve crew onboard safely landed the plane in Saudi Arabia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disclosed that the assailant is under investigation in Saudi Arabia and is expected to be transferred to the UAE for further inquiry. Saudi Arabia has not released any official statements regarding their investigations.
Both pilots were hospitalized with injuries, as confirmed by Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia. FlyDubai stated that the exact reasons behind the incident remain unknown, cautioning against premature assumptions. The co-pilot’s actions are being viewed as a terrorist act by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, while Prime Minister Netanyahu referred to it as a “serious security incident.”
Praise has been directed towards the Flight FZ1073 captain and Indian national Smit Machchhar, hailed as a hero for his actions during the ordeal. Indian authorities have met with Machchhar’s family to provide updates on his condition. Passengers who intervened in subduing the attacker have also been commended by Israeli authorities.
Yaniv Hayun, one of the individuals who helped restrain the attacker, recounted the harrowing experience of taking control of the plane as it descended. Security concerns have intensified in Israel ahead of upcoming elections, especially following past attacks and ongoing regional tensions involving the US, Israel, Iran, and militant groups like Hezbollah.
