U.S. President Donald Trump’s ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, announced her resignation on Tuesday following allegations of misconduct. Despite the accusations, Guilfoyle stated that she will vigorously defend herself. The Trump administration disclosed that Guilfoyle was asked to step down due to the severe criticisms surrounding her alleged improper and potentially illegal actions during her time in Athens.
President Trump mentioned that while Guilfoyle was performing well in Greece, certain reports raised concerns. The Wall Street Journal highlighted various instances of questionable behavior by Guilfoyle, such as allegedly threatening a host country official, accepting inappropriate gifts, and offering to leverage her influence within the Republican administration in exchange for settling a substantial credit card debt.
Guilfoyle denied these allegations and expressed her determination to defend her reputation and integrity, emphasizing her commitment to upholding American values. Despite being narrowly confirmed by the Senate a little over a year ago, her appointment faced skepticism from Democrats who questioned her qualifications and criticized the perceived nepotism due to her past relationship with Donald Trump Jr.
Prior to the announcement of Guilfoyle’s resignation, Greek opposition parties had demanded that the Foreign Ministry summon her to address the accusations leveled against her. The issue was deemed a matter of national dignity by some Greek officials, while the Foreign Minister asserted that Guilfoyle had been treated like any other ambassador and deemed an official summons unnecessary.
Meanwhile, Democratic lawmakers in the U.S. have called for an investigation into Guilfoyle’s conduct during her tenure. The Wall Street Journal’s reports detailed various incidents, including Guilfoyle allegedly discussing undermining the Greek government, promoting the interests of a specific Greek company, and granting access to a lobbyist at diplomatic meetings.
During a visit to Greece, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized journalists for questioning Guilfoyle’s actions, dismissing the reports as unreliable sources. Guilfoyle’s legal team refuted the allegations, stating that the money sought from a Trump donor was for services rendered before her ambassadorial nomination. They also denied any impropriety regarding Guilfoyle’s travel arrangements.
In response to the allegations against Guilfoyle, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia commended Guilfoyle’s contributions and wished her well. Guilfoyle’s resignation adds to a series of controversies involving Trump-aligned ambassadors, with instances of diplomatic tensions in countries like Canada and France due to the behavior of U.S. representatives.
