Keir Starmer Affirms UK Support in Kyiv Visit

Keir Starmer is set to visit Kyiv today to affirm the UK’s strong support for Ukraine as he nears the end of his term in office.

In one of his final official duties as Prime Minister, Mr. Starmer will hold discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv to address the assistance needed by Kyiv in its resistance against Russia’s unlawful invasion after years of ongoing conflict.

During the meeting, Mr. Starmer will reassure President Zelensky of the United Kingdom’s steadfast backing in the face of Vladimir Putin’s actions and emphasize the progress made towards achieving lasting peace. This trip to Ukraine marks the Prime Minister’s final foreign visit before handing over leadership to Andy Burnham on Monday.

In anticipation of the visit, Mr. Starmer expressed admiration for the resilience of the Ukrainian people and their determination to defend their freedom, highlighting their crucial role in safeguarding European security.

He underscored the united stance of the UK and its allies against Russian aggression through organizations like the Coalition of the Willing and NATO, emphasizing Britain’s unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine, not only for its own sake and European security but also for the impact on British families facing economic challenges due to the conflict.

Reflecting on past interactions, Mr. Starmer recounted inviting President Zelensky to Downing Street following an incident involving Donald Trump in 2025, showcasing a gesture of solidarity and support for the Ukrainian leader amidst challenging times.

Recently, Emmanuel Macron honored Mr. Starmer with the Legion d’honneur for his pivotal role in creating a coalition to oversee potential peace agreements in Ukraine, acknowledging his significant contributions to the cause.

Ahead of assuming leadership, Andy Burnham affirmed that Labour’s support for Ukraine will remain resolute, emphasizing the interconnectedness of British and Euro-Atlantic security with the situation in Ukraine. He commended Mr. Starmer’s leadership on the issue, applauding the government’s initiatives in supporting Ukraine and resisting Russian influence.

The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine persists, with recent reports of casualties in cities like Odesa and Sumy, underscoring the urgent need for continued international support for Ukraine.
