Andy Burnham Considers Wealth Tax for Fairness

Ahead of potentially assuming the role of Prime Minister, Andy Burnham has not dismissed the idea of implementing a wealth tax.

Expressing the need for “greater fairness,” Burnham acknowledged the possibility of requiring individuals to contribute “a little more” through taxation.

The former Mayor of Greater Manchester has previously shown interest in increasing taxes on landlords who keep high street properties vacant and on warehouses belonging to companies like Amazon.

During an interview with Gary Lineker for Goalhanger, Burnham emphasized the importance of assessing the financial landscape thoroughly before making decisions. He highlighted the significance of unity and fairness, stating his intention to avoid creating divisions or animosity.

Although Burnham did not rule out the idea of a wealth tax, he stressed the complexity of future decisions and the necessity of ensuring financial sustainability without causing unnecessary discord.

As speculation continues regarding his potential Chancellor, names like Ed Miliband, Shabana Mahmood, and John Healey have emerged in connection to the role. Mahmood is reportedly the frontrunner following opposition to Miliband’s appointment due to Labour’s defeat in the 2015 general election.

Burnham has affirmed his commitment to maintaining Labour’s manifesto pledges of not increasing income tax, national insurance, or VAT if he assumes office.

However, in a statement from October last year, Burnham urged the Chancellor to consider reevaluating council tax, questioning the lack of updates since 1991. He argued for continuous revaluation, even if it is perceived as a form of wealth tax on individuals with high-value properties.

Regarding potential disagreements with Donald Trump, Burnham expressed readiness to stand firm on his beliefs while upholding respect for the office and the UK-US relationship.

Emphasizing the importance of authenticity and respectful disagreements, Burnham highlighted the need to engage with Trump directly and assertively.
