A judge has ordered Donald Trump to provide his financial records to the BBC in connection with his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the network. Trump’s legal team attempted to block the ruling, citing it as premature and burdensome.
The legal dispute stems from Trump’s legal action against the British broadcaster over the editing of a Panorama documentary from 2024 covering the US Capitol riots. The BBC requested financial documents from the Donald J Trump Revocable Trust, which oversees the president’s business interests and assets. Judge Enjolique Lett approved the request to access records from the trust, managed by Trump’s eldest son.
Trump’s representatives criticized the BBC’s request as a “fishing expedition,” while BBC lawyers defended the need for the financial details to evaluate the program’s financial impact. The court papers highlighted that Trump’s alleged financial losses prompted the request for information from the trust and its associated entities.
The trust, represented by Trump’s lawyers, resisted the demand, arguing against broad financial discovery from numerous non-parties. Trump’s lawsuit contends that the Panorama episode, aired just before his 2024 presidential election victory, caused him reputational and financial harm by suggesting he incited the Capitol riot following his defeat to Joe Biden.
Following the allegations, BBC director-general Tim Davie resigned, and BBC chairman Samir Shah apologized for an “error of judgment” in the program’s editing. The BBC is pushing back against the lawsuit, fearing its impact on free reporting about public figures and events. Additionally, the network challenges the Florida court’s jurisdiction in handling the case, as the program was never broadcast in the state or the US.
