Holidaymakers planning a trip to Italy are advised to prepare for significant disruptions as a nationwide transportation strike looms, set to cause chaos across the country. The 24-hour strike, scheduled from 9 pm on Thursday, May 28, to 9 pm on Friday, May 29, is anticipated to impact rail services, airports, metro systems, buses, and regional transport networks.
Multiple unions have confirmed industrial action involving key rail operators such as Trenitalia, Trenord, and Italo, raising concerns over potential cancellations and delays on vital routes connecting major cities like Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, Bologna, and Naples. The strike is expected to particularly affect long-distance rail services outside of protected operating hours.
Italy’s Ministry of Transport has released lists of “guaranteed” services that must continue operating during specified commuter windows between 6 am and 9 am, and then again between 6 pm and 9 pm. The Civil Aviation Authority of Italy, ENAC, has assured that flights are legally safeguarded during specific periods between 7 am and 10 am, as well as 6 pm and 9 pm.
Passengers are advised by the aviation authority to directly contact airlines for the most up-to-date information regarding individual flights. Experts in travel have cautioned that the strike may lead to broader disruptions across European airline networks due to changes in aircraft schedules and an increase in rebooking demands.
Key travel hubs like Rome Fiumicino Airport, Milan Malpensa Airport, Venice Marco Polo Airport, and Naples International Airport are expected to encounter delays, congestion, and potential schedule adjustments during the strike. Moreover, services like airport transfers, metro systems, buses, and regional rail services might operate at reduced capacity or face temporary suspensions based on local participation levels.
Tourists visiting popular attractions such as the Colosseum, Vatican City, Venice’s canals, and Florence’s historic center could also face delays due to disruptions in local transport networks. Travel experts recommend that passengers closely monitor airline notifications and rail updates as schedules may change rapidly throughout the strike period. While easyJet currently plans to maintain normal flight operations, customers are advised to allocate extra time for airport travel.
An easyJet spokesperson mentioned, “We are actively working to minimize any disruption caused by the national industrial action in Italy. Our current plan is to operate flights as scheduled, but we recommend that customers traveling allow extra time for airport procedures. If any flights are affected, we will directly contact customers to assist in rearranging their plans and apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
Italy continues to be a favored tourist destination for Britons, with millions of UK travelers visiting annually during the spring and summer seasons.
