An Italian NATO fighter jet successfully brought down a drone over Lithuania in the early hours of Tuesday, as reported by the Lithuanian National Crisis Management Centre. The drone, suspected to have entered from Belarus, was intercepted near Pratkunai village in southern Lithuania, close to the city of Kaunas. The exact origin of the drone is yet to be determined.
The incursion of military drones into the airspace of neighboring countries of Russia has raised concerns about the spillover of Russia’s conflict in Ukraine into NATO territories. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that any strikes near the alliance’s territory would prompt NATO to enhance its support for Kyiv. He also committed to strengthening the defense systems of the 32-nation alliance along the extensive eastern border with Russia.
There was no confirmation on whether the drone was of Ukrainian or Russian origin. In recent times, Ukrainian drones have unintentionally crossed into NATO airspace in the Baltic region, with Kyiv attributing these incidents to Russian signal interference. A drone alert was issued in Vilnius and the surrounding areas.
The Lithuanian army shared footage from the crash site, displaying debris scattered across the grass, including wooden and charred parts. NATO Baltic Air Defence mission fighters have been patrolling the skies over Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia since these Baltic countries joined the alliance in 2004. The mission’s aircraft had previously intercepted stray Ukrainian drones over Estonia in May and over Latvia in June and August.
In a separate event, Denmark reported an encounter with a Russian ship as a Russian frigate fired two flares toward a Danish military helicopter on Monday. Danish officials condemned the incident as unacceptable, highlighting the escalating aggression of Russia and its testing of NATO.
The Baltic Sea region remains on high alert following incidents such as gas pipeline disruptions, airspace violations, and drone sightings. Russia has consistently denied allegations of hybrid attacks in Europe. In ongoing conflicts on Tuesday, a Russian drone strike resulted in casualties and power outages in Zaporizhzhia in southeast Ukraine, according to acting regional governor Mykhailo Semikin. Additionally, attacks on port infrastructure in Odesa led to damage in the southern Black Sea region.
Russian forces reportedly targeted a cargo ship and a ferry transporting military supplies in Ukraine’s Chornomorsk port, as stated by the Russian Defense Ministry. U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned an alleged agreement between Russia and Ukraine to avoid targeting each other’s energy infrastructure, without providing further details. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed readiness for de-escalation but remained skeptical of Russia’s compliance with such agreements.
