An airline has made the decision to discontinue two significant routes from London Heathrow this fall, despite recently introducing them less than a year ago.
IndiGo, a budget airline, has announced the termination of flights between London Heathrow and India, citing challenges in the operating environment due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, increasing fuel costs, and airspace restrictions as reasons for discontinuing these routes. The service is scheduled to end on October 25 when the leased planes from Norse Atlantic Airways will be returned.
The airline had been operating direct flights to Delhi and Mumbai from London Heathrow, but these destinations will no longer be serviced by IndiGo. The airline, which is India’s largest, has assured affected customers that it will assist in providing suitable alternatives, refunds, or other travel arrangements.
IndiGo has indicated that it is awaiting the delivery of new Airbus A350-900 aircraft before resuming operations between India and Heathrow. Additionally, the airline plans to cease operations on other routes from Manchester Airport, with these changes expected to take effect later this month.
The Mumbai and Delhi routes, which commenced in July 2025, are set to cease operations on August 31. IndiGo is known for offering affordable travel options between the UK and India, with one-way flights from Manchester to Mumbai starting as low as £290.
While IndiGo makes these route adjustments, several other airlines will continue to provide flights between UK airports and the two Indian cities. The airline recently appointed Willie Walsh, a former Irish pilot and airline veteran, as its new CEO following a scheduling crisis in 2025 that led to mass flight cancellations and the resignation of the former chief executive, Pieter Elbers.
