“Historic Black Mayor Enlists Private Security Amid Racist Threats”

The initial Black mayor of the popular town of Haverfordwest has enlisted the services of private security guards following racist threats associated with his position. Councillor Randell Thomas-Turner, 37 years old, achieved a significant milestone in May by becoming the first Black elected mayor of the Pembrokeshire town, home to approximately 14,500 residents. He expressed that his selection symbolized the progress of the community.

Subsequently, the mayor took steps to secure private security for the town’s customary Beating of the Bounds ceremony, citing concerns for his personal safety. Asserting a zero-tolerance policy towards racism, discrimination, harassment, or any form of threatening conduct, Cllr Thomas-Turner emphasized that individual councilors’ matters were being addressed by the appropriate authorities. He reiterated his dedication to serving the town with pride and commitment.

Some eyebrows were raised when security personnel were observed accompanying the mayor during the historic civic event, which involves a water-based procession to affirm the town’s fishing rights and has historical origins in medieval boundary-setting customs.

The council clarified that the mayor independently arranged the security measures, which were neither sanctioned nor funded by the council. It clarified that the decision was a precaution taken on a personal level, and all expenses were covered by Cllr Thomas-Turner himself.

The council emphasized that the presence of security should not be construed as an indication of a specific threat to the event, participants, or the public. It confirmed that the ceremony proceeded smoothly, maintaining a safe and family-friendly environment.

In a separate statement, the council denounced all types of abuse, intimidation, and threatening behavior aimed at those serving their communities, underlining the importance of respectful public discourse for local democracy.

Cllr Thomas-Turner, also the youngest mayor in Haverfordwest for a century, expressed his gratitude for the appointment and aspired to contribute to a future characterized by unity, opportunity, compassion, and community cohesion.

Pembrokeshire county councilor Michael Williams characterized the situation as “appalling but sadly not surprising,” highlighting the growing boldness of some individuals in expressing racist sentiments publicly. He condemned the reports as a disgrace and called for those responsible to feel ashamed of their actions.
