A young heiress to a fortune was fatally shot at an exclusive safari lodge in South Africa shortly after a close friend and senior staff member met a similar tragic fate on the same property. Caroline von Rantzau, 26, sustained a gunshot wound on June 1 at the Leeuwfontein hunting reserve, owned by her affluent shipping family. Her untimely demise followed the discovery of her associate, financial manager Arno Koën, 44, also shot dead on the premises the day before.
The incidents have drawn scrutiny to the vast Limpopo estate, prompting authorities to investigate a potential connection between the two killings. Initially, misinformation from the family’s business falsely indicated that von Rantzau perished in a car accident on June 1, but subsequent reports confirmed that both deaths resulted from firearm-related injuries.
Koën was found on May 31 with gunshot wounds from a 9mm pistol, and later, more gunfire was reportedly heard on the property. Von Rantzau was subsequently found with fatal injuries inflicted by a .357 calibre hunting rifle. According to a witness cited in Bild, the firearm might have been taken from a gun cabinet owned by her father, Dr. Eberhart Rantzau.
Law enforcement spent two days scouring the estate, conducting interviews and collecting forensic evidence throughout the extensive private grounds. Despite ongoing investigations, no motive has been established, and no arrests have been made. Authorities have kept open the possibility of pursuing additional leads.
The tragic events have deeply shocked the von Rantzau family, prominent in Germany’s shipping sector. Von Rantzau, a rising figure within the family’s Hamburg-based business empire, had been residing in South Africa and had recently expanded her property holdings with two additional residences near the Mozambique border.
Known for her passion for animal care and hunting, she was closely associated with Koën, who oversaw the lodge’s financial matters. Described as a “foster father” and “mentor” by her, Koën shared a close bond with von Rantzau. Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba highlighted the significance of post-mortem examinations in uncovering the complete circumstances surrounding the tragic incidents.
“The findings from the autopsies will provide crucial insights into the causes of death and could dictate potential legal action against other individuals,” Ledwaba stated.
