Arizona State University acknowledged that a student from the hockey team collapsed during a training session on August 20 but did not disclose the individual’s identity for privacy reasons. The university stated that a comprehensive review led by ASU vice-president James Rund is underway to assess the workout, university policies, procedures, and training protocols related to the incident.
According to Carey, the university has been reserved in sharing details of the event. He indicated that Mayich underwent an intense workout without breaks or water for over an hour, describing it as a strenuous and military-style regimen. Following Mayich’s collapse, proper cooling measures were reportedly not promptly initiated, contrary to recommended heatstroke treatment practices.
Tempe, the location of the incident, recorded temperatures around 31 degrees Celsius on the morning of August 20. ASU notified university police about the player’s collapse, prompting an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. The university has emphasized the importance of adhering to heat illness guidelines and ensuring the safety of athletes during training sessions with third-party involvement.
