While these soft helmet shells are mandatory in practices for many positions to mitigate head impacts, they are not widely adopted during games in the Canadian professional league or in high school and youth leagues.
Derek Hogelie’s son, Emerson, stands out as the sole player on his Regina high school football team to wear a Guardian Cap during games. Hogelie admitted his decision was driven by a desire to protect his son from injury, influenced by the increasing number of NFL athletes wearing similar caps. Emerson embraced the choice without hesitation, inspired by his football heroes.
Despite the unique appearance of Guardian Caps, Hogelie prioritized safety over aesthetics, emphasizing the importance of protecting the brain, the body’s most vital organ. The cost-effective additional layer of protection provided by the caps resonated with him, prompting the decision to invest in his son’s safety.
The CFL’s implementation of Guardian Caps for linemen, running backs, and linebackers during practices and training camps yielded a 42% reduction in concussions during the 2023 training camp period. Bertrand-Hudon shared his positive experience, noting a noticeable decrease in blunt force impact while wearing the soft shell.
The Saskatchewan Selects Football Club took a proactive approach by mandating Guardian Caps for players in both practice and games three years ago. Director Zeljko Stefanovic emphasized the importance of player safety, collaborating with concussion expert Patrick Neary to ensure comprehensive injury prevention strategies beyond headgear.
Neary acknowledged a lack of conclusive research on the effectiveness of Guardian Caps, hindering their widespread adoption in minor league football. Despite this, he stressed the potential benefits of reducing direct head impacts and emphasized the importance of collecting more data to assess the caps’ impact on player safety.
Former high school player Owen Chay, experiencing lingering effects of head injuries, expressed regret over the absence of advanced safety measures during his playing days. While acknowledging potential stigma surrounding the caps’ appearance, Chay emphasized the paramount importance of prioritizing health and safety over concerns about perception on the field.
