“Fury Over Football Banner Claiming Falklands Are Argentinian”

Falklands veterans and politicians express outrage over football players displaying a banner proclaiming “the Falklands are Argentinian” following Argentina’s tense victory over England in the World Cup semi-final. Premier League stars including Lisandro Martinez, Cristian Romero, and Julian Alvarez exhibited the sign, written in Spanish as “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which was initially brought by fans into the Atlanta stadium and later appeared on the pitch after the match.

The match commenced amidst a charged atmosphere with both national anthems being loudly booed. Argentina’s vice-president, Victoria Villarruel, celebrated the win by posting a message emphasizing the significance of the victory, accompanied by a video seemingly featuring Argentinian soldiers.

In the lead-up to the match, Villarruel referred to England as “invaders” and “usurping pirates.” In Buenos Aires, fans carried a Union Flag-shaped coffin, while others burned a St George’s cross in protest.

Simon Weston, a Falklands War veteran who suffered severe burns during the conflict, criticized the players’ actions, stating that they should adhere to rules and respect the Falkland Islanders’ sovereignty decision. Weston emphasized the importance of politicians in Argentina promoting peace and not inciting animosity.

Jarvis Burt, whose brother perished in the Falklands War, demanded strict action against the players, highlighting the disrespect shown towards the lives lost in the conflict. He emphasized the inappropriateness of the banner display during a football match and urged FIFA to intervene.

Political figures also weighed in on the issue, with Lib Dem leader Ed Davey calling for the players to be excluded from the World Cup final for breaching regulations against displaying political messages. The Prime Minister’s spokeswoman reiterated the UK’s stance on the Falklands’ sovereignty resting with the islanders, while the Tory leader affirmed the British commitment to defending the Falkland Islands.

The Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly expressed distress to FIFA over the insensitivity of the banner display, highlighting the lasting trauma caused by the 1982 conflict. The ongoing territorial dispute between Argentina and Britain continues to fuel tensions, with past instances of controversy involving the Argentina national team.

The incident underscores the need for FIFA to enforce regulations prohibiting political messages in football and maintain respect for historical conflicts and international relations.
