“Starmer Confident in UK Support for Ukraine”

Keir Starmer expressed confidence in Ukraine’s ability to prevail in the conflict against Russia and emphasized the importance of unwavering support from Britain for Kyiv. During his final overseas visit, the Prime Minister traveled to the war-torn nation to demonstrate solidarity with President Volodymr Zelensky as the illegal war led by Vladimir Putin continues into its fifth year.

In an exclusive interview with The Mirror before stepping down, Starmer underscored Ukraine as a pivotal cause of this era and assured continued steadfast backing from the UK under his successor, Andy Burnham. He conveyed a strong message directly to President Zelensky to allay concerns in Kyiv regarding the change in British leadership, reaffirming the shared values of democracy and freedom.

Starmer emphasized the enduring support for Ukraine under Burnham’s leadership, stressing that the UK’s commitment remains resolute. He expressed optimism about Ukraine’s prospects in the conflict, citing significant advancements made by Ukrainian forces in pushing back Russian aggression and the effectiveness of international sanctions and collaborative efforts.

President Zelensky acknowledged concerns about leadership changes in the UK and France but emphasized the enduring strength of the relationships between nations. He expressed hope for continued strong ties with the UK during and after the conflict, a sentiment echoed by Starmer.

During a cordial meeting at the Presidential Palace in Kyiv, Zelensky honored Starmer with Ukraine’s prestigious “Order of Freedom.” The leaders paid tribute to Ukraine’s fallen heroes and held discussions on enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Starmer announced a €300 million aid package to provide Ukraine with advanced fighter jets, enabling the country to bolster its air defense capabilities.

The assistance will facilitate the deployment of 16 Gripen E fighter jets by 2029, equipped for air combat, ground strikes, and reconnaissance missions.
