“Fundraising Campaign Launched for Windrush Ship’s Anchor Recovery”

On June 22, 1948, the HMT Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks, marking a significant moment in its history. With over 1,000 passengers from Jamaica aboard, the ship’s purpose was to assist in the reconstruction efforts post-World War Two in Britain.

Recognized as the Windrush Generation, their impact is honored annually on Windrush Day for the contributions they and their descendants have made to the UK. The Windrush Anchor Memorial Foundation has initiated a £2 million fundraising campaign to retrieve the ship’s anchor from the Mediterranean seabed. The ship sank in 1954 off the Algerian coast due to an engine explosion, resulting in the loss of four crew members.

Initially a troop carrier, the vessel was transporting servicemen from the Far East post-Korean War. Despite a tragic engine failure, all 1,494 passengers were successfully rescued in a remarkable maritime operation. However, Royal Navy attempts to salvage the ship proved unsuccessful, leaving it submerged at sea.

Originally named Monte Rosa and built in Germany in 1930, the ship was repurposed by the German Navy during the war. In a tragic event in November 1942, it was utilized by the Nazis to transport Norwegian Jews to Auschwitz, leading to their deaths. Acquired by the British post-war, the ship was renamed HMT Empire Windrush and served a more honorable role until its eventual demise.

The Windrush Anchor Memorial Foundation, led by Marie van der Zyl OBE, aims to raise £2 million to support the anchor’s recovery, conservation efforts, memorial installation, and educational initiatives. Donations can be made through the campaign’s GoFundMe page. Additionally, The Windrush Board Game, designed to educate all age groups about the Windrush Generation’s history and contributions, is being relaunched for Windrush Day.

Plans are in place to create a replica anchor for outreach events, exhibitions, and educational activities nationwide. Sir Patrick Vernon, Chair of the Windrush Anchor Memorial Foundation, emphasizes that the anchor symbolizes courage, hope, and the Windrush Generation’s significant role in shaping modern Britain. The foundation aims to ensure that future generations understand and appreciate the legacy of the Windrush Generation and their impact on British society.
