A trial has heard that a teacher, Deborah Franklin, faced accusations of tying a young boy to her bed, blindfolding him, and engaging in alleged sexual acts, despite being trusted by his family. The 65-year-old former preparatory school teacher from Hertfordshire is denying eight charges of gross indecency against the boy during the 1990s when he was between nine and 12 years old. The prosecution alleges that Franklin, who became the boy’s private tutor, carried out repeated sexual activities involving him.
According to prosecutors at St Albans Crown Court, Franklin is accused of undressing in front of the boy, kissing him, encouraging him to touch her, and performing various sexual acts at both his and her residence. Franklin, who resides in Radlett, Hertfordshire, refutes these claims, stating that she has no recollection of tutoring the boy.
During the trial, Prosecutor Gavin Pottinger detailed the complainant’s allegations, including an incident where Franklin allegedly tied him to her bed and mentioned her husband’s name during another sexual encounter. Pottinger also mentioned witness accounts of Franklin spending time in the boy’s house without engaging in educational activities.
The prosecution emphasized that societal attitudes have changed since the alleged incidents, noting that Franklin’s close interactions with the boy were deemed acceptable back then. Defense barrister Aisling Byrnes raised doubts about the complainant’s story, highlighting inconsistencies and unlikelihood in the allegations. Byrnes questioned the feasibility of the alleged events occurring given the circumstances.
Judge Kamran Choudhry instructed the jury that the prosecution argues the complainant consistently reported the allegations to various individuals over the years. The complainant came forward to the police in 2024, with the prosecution stating that his disclosures align with his current account.
Franklin, in her defense, claimed that her relationship with the boy was appropriate and not overly intimate. She mentioned that memories related to the tutoring sessions resurfaced gradually. However, she denied the accusations put forth by the prosecution.
The trial is ongoing, with further testimonies and evidence yet to be presented.
