William F. Baker, an 84-year-old former broadcaster, and his wife have decided to put their long-time owned Henry Island up for sale. The couple purchased the nearly 90-hectare island in 1991, located a short boat ride away from Port Hood, N.S. Henry Island boasts a charming four-bedroom family home and a historic working lighthouse constructed in 1901.
Having used the island as a peaceful retreat from their bustling lives in New York City, the Bakers are now seeking a new owner who will uphold the island’s preservation. Baker, renowned for his career in broadcasting, served as the president of the PBS flagship station in New York for two decades and played a key role in launching Oprah Winfrey’s talk show during his tenure at Westinghouse Television.
Enchanted by lighthouses and desiring an island of their own, the Bakers discovered Henry Island, captivated by its serene surroundings and natural beauty. Surrounded by picturesque beaches and rugged cliffs, the island is a habitat for various wildlife, offering a tranquil escape from urban life.
Over the years, the Bakers have dedicated time and effort to renovating the island’s lighthouse and home, ensuring they are self-sufficient and eco-friendly. The property is now entirely off the grid, utilizing rainwater for drinking, solar power for electricity, and an outhouse for amenities.
