“Father’s Heartbreak Sparks Water Safety Campaign”

A father expressed his heartbreak as what should have been his daughter’s birthday festivities turned tragic when the exceptional student drowned in a tragic incident during a river outing in Burnsall, North Yorkshire. Palwasha Akbar, aged 13, encountered trouble while playing in the River Wharfe on May 31st and, despite being rescued, unfortunately succumbed in the hospital, becoming one of the 19 victims in water-related fatalities during a severe heatwave in May.

The distressing series of incidents prompted the Mirror to collaborate with bereaved families and various charities like the Royal Life Saving Society UK, RNLI, and RoSpa to launch the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ water safety campaign. In a water safety debate, Julian Smith MP highlighted the need for improved safety measures in areas like the Yorkshire Dales, emphasizing the tragic recurrence of fatalities in the same locations over the years.

Palwasha’s father, Irshad Akbar, lamented the sudden turn of events that transformed his daughter’s birthday celebration into a day of sorrow. He emphasized the need for enhanced safety precautions, including life jackets and protective barriers around potentially hazardous water areas, to prevent such tragedies from recurring. Irshad stressed the unpredictability of children and urged parents to remain vigilant and cautious around water bodies, underscoring the importance of safeguarding young ones from potential dangers.

Describing Palwasha as a gifted and compassionate student at Bronte Girls’ Secondary Academy, Irshad highlighted the profound impact of her loss on her family, friends, and community. Despite the grief, the family aims to honor Palwasha’s memory by fundraising for charitable causes and advocating for lasting safety improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future. Julian Smith MP echoed the call for national parks to prioritize safety alongside promotion efforts, emphasizing the critical need for responsible management to ensure visitor safety in these natural environments.
