John Robertson, a father of three, recounted the distressing moment he learned about his terminal cancer diagnosis after seeking medical help for difficulty swallowing. The 35-year-old from Ayr, Scotland, was recently diagnosed with stage four oesophageal adenocarcinoma, an uncommon cancer affecting the glandular cells in the oesophagus. His symptoms began in February, leading to a significant weight loss of three stone in just two and a half months, accompanied by severe chest pain.
Following a visit to his GP, John underwent an endoscopy that revealed a significant tumor obstructing 75% of his oesophagus, along with a bleed. The cancer has metastasized to various parts of his body, including his lungs, throat, liver, and right adrenal gland. Medical professionals have estimated he has approximately nine months left to live.
Expressing his devastation, John emphasized his desire to witness his children – Jorja, 15, Paris-Cole, eight, and Clay-Ty, four – grow up and create a future with his wife of 11 years, Nicole, 29. He described the news as shattering, highlighting his wish to be present for essential milestones in his children’s lives.
Despite being previously healthy, John began experiencing food blockages, leading to chest discomfort, prompting his visit to the doctor. The subsequent CT scans and biopsies confirmed the late-stage cancer diagnosis. Doctors believe the tumor may have been present for an extended period before symptoms manifested.
Currently on a liquid diet, John is preparing to start chemotherapy, with the possibility of needing a feeding tube. His fundraising campaign aims to finance private treatments and clinical trials not accessible through the NHS, with hopes of participating in trials in Germany and London. The funds raised will also contribute to creating lasting memories with his family during this challenging time.
John expressed his determination to be there for his family during significant occasions, mentioning his efforts to document messages and cards for future celebrations. He emphasized the importance of cherishing every moment with his loved ones.
