A tragic incident occurred at a bungee jumping site in Limeira, São Paulo, Brazil, resulting in the death of a 21-year-old woman named Maria Eduardo Rodrigues de Freitas. The young woman fell 130 feet into a ravine due to the absence of a safety cord that should have been attached by the staff. Prior to the fatal jump, Maria had shared a social media post expressing excitement about the experience. Following the incident, two workers fled the scene but were later apprehended by local authorities.
The São Paulo government confirmed that six individuals were questioned in connection with Maria’s death, with three men arrested and charged with homicide. The Civil Police are investigating the case to determine any criminal liability. The Limeira City Council intends to file a complaint against the Brazilian federal government for the lack of safety measures at the site. Mayor Murilo Félix emphasized the importance of holding responsible parties accountable for the oversight of safety protocols at the federal area.
