“Fans Flock to P.E.I. for ‘Road to Avonlea’ Convention”

When Patty Czajka was growing up in Detroit, she was captivated by a Canadian TV series set on Prince Edward Island. Every Sunday, she watched “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother and was especially fond of actress Mag Ruffman, who portrayed Aunt Olivia in the show during the 1990s.

Upon learning that Ruffman would be participating in a fan convention in P.E.I. dedicated to the series, Czajka eagerly bought a ticket to attend the event. Fans from around the globe gathered on the Island for the sold-out convention celebrating the acclaimed Canadian show, which premiered in 1990 and concluded after seven seasons in 1996.

“Road to Avonlea,” which aired in over 100 countries, followed the story of young Sarah Stanley, played by future Oscar winner Sarah Polley, who goes to live with her late mother’s relatives at the beginning of the 20th century. Loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, the series has continued to resonate with audiences over the years.

The convention, spanning three days, featured activities such as oyster and wine tastings, as well as panel discussions with the cast and crew of the show. Attendees also embarked on tours to visit filming locations, Montgomery’s birthplace, grave, and the Cavendish house that inspired her famous work, “Anne of Green Gables.”

Edward Lemon, the assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, the organizer of the convention, highlighted the enduring appeal of the show, noting its themes of kindness, friendship, and fellowship. He expressed optimism that “Road to Avonlea” would continue to attract new viewers and potentially host successful conventions in the future.

Mag Ruffman, reflecting on the convention experience, mentioned the emotional connection fans have with the show, emphasizing the lasting impact of portraying a beloved character like Aunt Olivia. Meanwhile, Czajka shared her delight in rewatching the series with her children, underscoring the rarity of finding a show that can be enjoyed by both parents and kids together.

The convention provided a nostalgic and heartwarming opportunity for fans to reunite with the beloved series and its characters, fostering a sense of community and shared appreciation for the enduring appeal of “Road to Avonlea.”
