Elections Alberta is reaching out to seasoned electoral staff nationwide to provide critical support during the upcoming October referendum. Maia Hanrahan, spokesperson for Elections Alberta, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts among electoral management bodies (EMBs) during significant election events. Highly specialized personnel from various EMBs are being invited to bolster the core Elections Alberta team, particularly for the demanding 48-hour continuous count post-voting.
Scheduled for October 19, the 2026 referendum will present Albertans with 10 pivotal questions, including the decision on the province’s relationship with Canada and other issues related to immigration and constitutional matters. Elections BC and Elections Saskatchewan have responded to Elections Alberta’s call for assistance, with Elections Saskatchewan viewing this as a valuable professional development opportunity for its staff in addition to aiding their counterparts in Alberta.
With over 30,000 applications already received from Albertans, Elections Alberta’s recruitment campaign is progressing positively towards its target of recruiting 60,000 electoral workers. While there are limitations on how external EMB workers can contribute due to logistical and staffing constraints, the collaborative effort is seen as a step forward in ensuring the successful execution of the referendum process. Additionally, the upcoming byelection in Calgary-Shaw may pose some challenges as Elections Alberta gears up for the significant referendum event with multiple critical questions.
