Vladimir Batinić, a resident of Calgary, recalls a series of conversations with his son regarding hunting. Despite his initial reluctance due to personal values and experiences, he eventually decided to support his son’s passion. Growing up in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war in the 1990s, Batinić had a complex relationship with firearms and hunting. After moving to Canada and experiencing different hunting styles, he found himself evolving away from the activity.
Although initially cautious about firearms, Batinić gradually introduced his children to hunting, emphasizing respect for nature and safe firearm handling. As his own interests shifted towards activities like yoga and vegetarianism, he struggled to align with his son’s enthusiasm for hunting. However, a pivotal moment during a hunting trip with his son led to a successful deer hunt, marking a significant milestone for both father and son.
Despite his reservations, Batinić acknowledges the importance of supporting his son’s interests, even if they diverge from his own. The shared experience of the successful deer hunt served as a bonding moment between them, showcasing the value of understanding and embracing individual passions within a family dynamic.
