“Elderly Man Brutally Attacked at Sydney Care Home”

An elderly man was hospitalized after being severely beaten by another resident at a care home. John Cain, 87, was attacked in a secure garden courtyard on Wednesday, June 17, at HammondCare’s Hammondville facility in Sydney. Disturbing hospital images show him with extensive facial injuries and covered in blood, requiring a neck brace and immediate medical attention.

His daughter, Margaret, shocked by the incident, recounted receiving a distressing call informing her of her father’s injuries. Despite being told not to come, she insisted on accompanying him to the hospital. John’s family is seeking answers while he continues to recover in the hospital.

HammondCare has launched an investigation into the assault, expressing deep regret over the incident. Executive General Manager Jenny Summerton emphasized the facility’s commitment to resident safety and the challenges of caring for individuals with complex behavioral needs.

Following the assault, a 69-year-old man, Geoffrey Innes, has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and is under police guard at Liverpool Hospital. He is set to appear in court for a bedside hearing. An internal investigation is ongoing, and measures have been implemented to prevent further incidents, with families of other residents being informed of the situation.
