“Coronell University President Pushes for Change After Student Gang Rape”

Cornell University’s president expressed deep concern about the reported gang rape of a student at a fraternity house in 2024, highlighting its profound impact on the institution and committing to enhanced transparency following criticism of the university’s response to the incident.

In a video address to the Cornell community, Michael Kotlikoff acknowledged the challenging nature of the past week, emphasizing the need for thorough investigations into the allegations and the troubling issues they raise regarding sexual assault, dehumanization, and the culture surrounding parties, alcohol, and drug use.

Kotlikoff reiterated the university’s support for an independent review of its handling of the case, as requested by New York Governor Kathy Hochul. He also endorsed Hochul’s decision to involve the state attorney general in the criminal investigation.

Recognizing the criticism aimed at Cornell’s communication regarding the incident, Kotlikoff emphasized the institution’s commitment to uncovering the answers the community seeks. He pledged increased transparency and engagement opportunities for students, parents, and other stakeholders to address concerns and build trust.

The case has sparked calls for changes to New York’s sexual assault laws, particularly in addressing challenges related to prosecutions involving intoxicated individuals. Efforts are underway to revise laws that complicate the prosecution of such cases, including the “voluntary intoxication loophole.”

Moreover, Kotlikoff called for a reevaluation of the role of fraternities and sororities in campus life, emphasizing the importance of individual accountability within group settings and the need to foster environments that prioritize safety and respect for all community members.
