Controversial American Commentators Barred from UK

Two prominent American commentators known for their strong opposition to Israel have been barred from entering the United Kingdom.

Cenk Uygur, host of the online talk show Young Turks, and his nephew Hasan Piker were both denied entry to the UK to participate in SXSW London. Uygur also mentioned being blocked from speaking at an event at Oxford University.

Piker has faced criticism for previous remarks, including stating that America “deserved 9/11” in 2019, a comment he later apologized for. He has also expressed views favoring Hamas over Israel. Despite claiming not to be antisemitic, he identifies as anti-Israel.

Their electronic travel authorization was revoked following a decision by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, citing concerns that their presence could fuel antisemitism. This action follows a similar move against Kanye West earlier this year after he made anti-semitic comments.

The decision has sparked debate, with Uygur expressing disappointment over the ban, questioning the freedom of expression. Piker echoed these sentiments, accusing Israel of influencing the UK’s decision-making.

The Community Security Trust, a Jewish organization, urged event organizers to be cautious about providing a platform for Piker, citing concerns over his rhetoric and support for extremist groups.

Labour MP David Taylor welcomed the visa revocation, emphasizing the need to prevent hate speech and division in the UK. The Oxford Union president defended the importance of free speech and vowed to ensure that the debate would proceed, even considering an online format.

The Home Office stated that the cancellation of their travel authorization was based on the potential risk they posed to UK society. Additionally, the government blocked 11 foreign nationals described as “far-right agitators” from entering the UK for a recent rally.

This decision has raised concerns about freedom of expression and political influence. SXSW London affirmed its commitment to hosting diverse voices and fostering open dialogue despite the travel restrictions on Uygur and Piker.
