Despite a trust’s clear warning about the extreme danger, people persist in trespassing into a closed quarry that was sealed off over ten years ago following the tragic deaths of two young men.
Reports indicate that individuals are continuously breaching the safety barriers, with some even engaging in swimming activities at the quarry during the recent Bank Holiday weekend. This concerning behavior comes amidst a surge in water-related fatalities, with the UK heatwave claiming the lives of 17 individuals, including a 13-year-old girl and a 72-year-old woman.
Deborah Fox, the chief executive of the Malvern Hills Trust, disclosed that despite its closure, people are still utilizing the lake at the Gullet Quarry in Worcestershire to cool off in the scorching weather. She emphasized the critical nature of heeding warnings against swimming in the quarry for personal safety.
The quarry has remained off-limits for years after the tragic drownings of Russell O’Neill, 17, on July 6, 2013, and Justas Juzenas, 22, on July 22, the latter of which were ruled accidental by Coroner Roland Wooderson.
Fox reiterated the hazards of swimming in the quarry lake, cautioning against the severe risks posed by the frigid water and cold water shock, which can incapacitate even proficient swimmers, potentially leading to drowning.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued advisories regarding cold water shock and drowning risks during the recent warm spell. The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) warned that cold water shock can affect anyone abruptly entering cold water, irrespective of their swimming abilities.
Tragically, the UK recorded 17 water-related deaths during the heatwave, with a 13-year-old girl becoming the latest victim after going missing in the River Wharfe near Yorkshire. Additionally, a woman in her 60s lost her life while attempting to rescue her dog in Thornton-Cleveleys.
The youngest casualty, 12-year-old Junior Slater, encountered difficulties in the River Ribble, as confirmed by Lancashire Police. Slater’s family paid tribute to him, expressing profound sadness over the loss of their beloved family member.
