Investigations are currently ongoing to determine why a passenger aircraft was permitted to take off while US President Donald Trump’s helicopter was in close proximity.
Marine Forces One was nearing Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 4 when the incident occurred – a breach of safety protocols implemented following a mid-air collision near the bustling airport last year.
Both the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration announced on Wednesday that they were examining the circumstances surrounding the jet’s departure as the helicopter departed from the White House with the president on board.
Following a tragic incident on January 29, 2025, where 67 individuals lost their lives in a collision between an airliner and an Army Black Hawk helicopter, the FAA mandated a temporary halt of all take-offs and landings at the Washington, DC airport whenever a conflicting route was taken by a passing helicopter.
The airspace in the vicinity of the White House and Reagan airport experiences heavy congestion due to the presence of military and commercial aircraft.
The airplane that took off on Tuesday was ascending above Marine One as the helicopter approached, ensuring that the two aircraft were not on a collision course.
A preliminary investigation by the FAA revealed that there was a brief loss of separation between the aircraft, but they subsequently moved away from each other.
“The air traffic controller maintained communication with both the commercial pilot and the Marine One pilot during the separation incident,” stated the FAA.
The White House reassured that Trump was never endangered during the incident.
“The pilots of Marine One are among the finest aviators globally, and the President was never at risk,” mentioned White House spokesperson Kush Desai.
The Marine Corps stood by the decisions made by their helicopter pilots.
Past issues have arisen due to inadequate communication between military and civilian air traffic controllers at Reagan airport.
