“Canada Introduces Productivity Mega-Deduction for Investments”

The Canadian government unveiled a significant tax reform during the Canada Investment Summit, introducing a new measure called the productivity mega-deduction. This initiative enables businesses to immediately deduct the full cost of investments in various sectors such as machinery, equipment, clean energy, and zero-emission vehicles.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking at the summit, emphasized the government’s objective of positioning Canada as the most appealing destination for investment within the G7 nations. The productivity mega-deduction expands upon the previous productivity super-deduction, which was limited to specific investments like equipment, machinery, and technology. Initially covering only 15% of potential investments, the enhanced program now includes two-thirds of assets as eligible for deduction.

Previously, Canadian companies could recover costs gradually over a project’s lifespan. However, with this new program, funds are reimbursed immediately, potentially encouraging investors to allocate more capital to new ventures. Randall Bartlett, Desjardins’ deputy chief economist, highlighted the substantial incentives provided by the initiative, aiming to stimulate rapid investment by companies.

This tax reform enhances Canada’s competitiveness globally, particularly in terms of tax rates, according to Bartlett. The government estimates that the change will reduce the country’s marginal effective tax rate from 13% to 6.4%, positioning Canada with the lowest rate among G7 nations. This adjustment could play a crucial role amidst trade tensions, potentially persuading companies to retain operations in Canada and proceed with investments previously delayed due to market uncertainties.

Despite the anticipated benefits, the initiative comes with an estimated cost of $36 billion over five years. Bartlett noted that current high oil prices could offset the immediate impact of this expenditure, but cautioned the government to ensure long-term financial sustainability to support such significant spending.

The government’s move has the potential to reshape Canada’s investment landscape and bolster economic growth, signaling a strategic effort to attract and retain businesses in the country.
