A man has been charged in connection with an altercation at a grocery store in southwest Calgary involving a dispute over tariffs, during which he allegedly threatened to shoot a man in front of his family. The incident, described as highly risky by Staff Sgt. Joe Hebert, occurred on September 3 at the Woodbine Safeway on 2525 Woodview Dr. S.W.
According to the police, the man, who was shopping with his wife and child, was approached by a 49-year-old stranger who engaged in discussions about tariffs. The situation escalated when the suspect began making anti-Canadian and pro-American statements and eventually threatened to retrieve a shotgun to harm the man in front of his family.
Store employees intervened, leading to police being contacted, and the suspect was later escorted out of the store. Following witness reports, law enforcement located the man at his residence on Woodside Road S.W. in the Woodlands neighborhood, where they observed a firearm and heard a gunshot without any injuries.
The suspect was apprehended within an hour of the initial confrontation at the store. Authorities seized two firearms from his home, including a loaded 12-gauge shotgun, alongside ammunition and a BB gun. The man is facing multiple charges such as uttering threats of causing death or bodily harm, possessing an unlicensed weapon, and negligently storing a firearm. His court appearance is scheduled for September 17.
