In West Kelowna, British Columbia, authorities are searching for an individual dressed in a Cat in the Hat costume who reportedly pursued a teenager in the Okanagan neighborhood. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have not disclosed further specifics but mentioned that the teenager safely reached home, and the suspect remains unidentified.
A photograph released by the Mounties displays the suspect in the Cat in the Hat outfit, including the character’s iconic red-and-white striped hat, standing on a street at night. The police label the occurrence as a “worrying prank,” clarifying that wearing the costume itself is not unlawful. However, following someone in a manner that induces fear may potentially constitute criminal harassment.
The Cat in the Hat is a recognizable character originating from Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel’s book in 1957, later adapted into a live-action film in 2003 featuring Canadian actor Mike Myers. West Kelowna RCMP urge anyone possessing dash-camera or security footage from around 9 p.m. on August 24 in the 2000 block of Shamrock Drive to come forward.
Cpl. Devon Gerrits emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Regardless of the individual’s intentions, causing a young person to feel unsafe by following them is highly troubling.” The police advise parents to instruct their children to head towards a secure, populated area if they suspect being followed, and to seek help from a trusted adult or call 911 if in immediate danger.
